Wed 11 Mar 2026 08:00 A day in the Tarkine Part 2 Hiking 3

Leaving from the Burnie Yacht Club at 8am and driving to the Forest General Store 526 Mengha Rd Forest for our coffee fix first! From there we will head for Irishtown and turn right down into the Roger River area following the Sumac Rd over the famous Kanunnah Bridge. It sits high above the mighty Arthur River and is always a great place to stop and have a wander, there is an undercover reserve for those that didnt have that first coffee fix!  At the other end of the Bridge we turn left and stop shortly after to see the view from the famous Sumac Lookout!  On from here we will drive to see the beautiful Lake Chisholm sinkhole area before retracing back to Julius River Reserve and spending the rest of our time for the day here!  There are undercover areas, beautiful forest tracks etc to explore and a Toilet.  Come and help us explore this wonderful area for the day!

Thu 12 Mar 2026 10:00 High Tea In A High Place Hiking 3

Just for fun, lets walk to the top of a hill with some fancy food and champagne for a shared high tea with a view.

Sat 14 Mar 2026 10:00 Lake Barrington Kayaking Kayaking

Fingers crossed for a fine sunny day to have a paddle on Lake Barrington to have a look at Forth Falls. Bring your lunch as we will find somewhere to get out for lunch and a swim if the weather is kind.  This won't be a hard paddle and Terry the Tinny will be joining us.

Sun 15 Mar 2026 07:30 PCT Working Bee Working Bee 3

We were fortunate to have obtained a Wildcare grant to employ specialised contractors to work on some sections for us. We may need to also do work on these sections, so come along to visit some of the areas we only get to during summer. Join us for a pleasant day in the bush... or maybe even a mountain view.

Thu 19 Mar 2026 09:30 Black Bluff Hiking 4 12

With the track in good condition, I thought a walk to Black Bluff is called for.  There will be 2 options here, with number one being a walk to the trig point and number two, a walk to Paddy's Tarn only. It will all depend on the day, the weather and the group.  I am prepared to split the group for those who want to venture up to the trig point (this includes me).  Please bring lunch and snacks.  Wet weather gear and warm clothes are a must as the weather can change quite rapidly up on Blackie.  Sturdy boots are also necessary so no sneekers or no walk (with me).

Sun 22 Mar 2026 Sat 28 Mar 2026 07:30 Lake Burbury Kayaking Kayaking 10

Lake Burbury kayak camp.

I would like to hold a 3-4 night camp on Lake Burbury (with a 7 day window), with 1 or 2 camp sites and explore the Lake by kayak as day trips.

Details will be announced by early January 2026. The trip is weather dependent and we may need to be flexible a day or 2 either side of the stated dates.

Sun 22 Mar 2026 09:45 Lunch With A View - Take 2 Cycling Cycling 8

I put this ride on in early February and managed to perfectly coincide the ride with the only rain band that had crossed the state in about six weeks.  Consequently we only had lunch but we'll try again. The ride is a 32km circuit on both bike paths and fairly quiet roads. I'll need to book the Atrium Cafe at least a week ahead so please register early and be certain you can attend.

Wed 25 Mar 2026 08:30 British Walk in Stanley Hiking 2 15

Meet 8.30am at the Burnie Yacht Club and drive to Stanley.  We will walk to see Henry Hellyer's grave at the cemetery as well as various other points of interest before settling into the pub at 19/21 Church St for lunch at 12.30pm.  Come along and explore beautiful Stanley.  Bring your thermos for a cuppa if you like or find a coffee shop!

Thu 26 Mar 2026 11:00 Mt Gnomon to Mt Dial and return Hiking 3 10

A day in the Mighty Dial never disappoints! This walk offers the perfect mix of challenge, stunning views, and plenty of fresh air. We’ll meet at the Mt Gnomon car park at 11am before heading up the track to Mt Gnomon. The climb is a little steep, but the sweeping views from the top make it well worth the effort. After a break for lunch, we’ll continue along the saddle to Mt Dial. Even though it’s a return trip, there’s always something new to notice along the way. Expect around 3 hours of walking, with a few ups and downs. As always, bring sturdy boots, a hat, rain jacket, food, water, and of course—your best smile!

Sat 28 Mar 2026 09:15 Information Day for Prospective Members Training N/A 10

This is a club training day for new members, 'prospectives', regardless of their level of experience. It will be focussed at improving members' bushwalking skills and knowledge about the club. The day will cover a range of topics indoors in the morning followed in the afternoon by series of training exercises outdoors. Feel free to bring along any questions about bushwalking or the club. Robin has about 2,000 days experience on one-day and extended trips in the outdoors, many in a leadership role.

Attending a training day is part of the requirements to become a senior member of the club. Participants should have joined the club before they attend. Register via the members' trip registration page on the club website. The day will start at 9:15 am at Apex House, Ulverstone and finish after a practical component at the Dial Range, near Penguin, about 5 pm.

Participants will be expected to have read the Guide to Bushwalking for Prospective members which is on the club website. This document includes information about the club as well as bushwalking more generally. More details will be sent to participants after they have registered. The day will be adjusted to take into account participants experience and interests.

Sat 28 Mar 2026 17:00 Mystery Bus Tour Social Event 20

Because it's a mystery bus tour ..... it's all a mystery ! There will be a cost ( to be calculated ) but will include the bus and evening meal. BYO drinks.
More information will be provided closer to the event. All participants will be given plenty of notice with meeting points etc.

Wed 1 Apr 2026 Thu 2 Apr 2026 07:30 Tyndall Range and Mt Murchison Hiking Multiday 4 10

A couple of days away staying overnight at the Tullah Lakeside Lodge (64734121). We will meet at Ridgley and drive to the start of the Tyndall Range Walk on the Wednesday morning.  After a big effort up onto the Range, we can then enjoy some time exploring this wonderful place and return to the Tullah Lakeside Lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.  For those who want to bring their own form of accommodation, that is absolutely fine but please make your own arrangements on where you will overnight.  For those choosing to stay at the Lodge, please make your own overnight booking. On the Thursday morning, for those who are interested, we will climb Mt Murchison, returning home in the late afternoon/early evening.

Please note that Mt Murchison has some interesting sections on the climb to the top, so if "exposure" is a problem, it may not be the mountain for you.

Fri 3 Apr 2026 Sat 4 Apr 2026 07:30 Scott-Kilvert Hut 60th Anniversary Hiking Multiday 3

Dear NWWC,

Sat 4 Apr 2026 08:45 Hounslow Heath, Riggs Pass Hiking 4 12

I would like participants to be ready to catch the 9am bus to Ronny Creek. From there we walk to Waldheim to start up the Hounslow Heath track. The old Riggs Pass track starts at the beginning of the Maryland track, it is quite overgrown in places, so scrub gloves may be of assistance. Hounslow Heath can be quite wet depending on recent weather. However, this is lovely circuit walk with fabulous views.

Sat 11 Apr 2026 07:30 Ragged Jack Hiking 4 15

Looks like it’s been about 5 years since this hill was on the club program. It’s not a long walk, being about 8km or so and in the order of 5 to 6 hours. But with the drive and the shorter days it’s not a bad option for this time of year. About half of the walk is on an old fire trail with the rest off track following cairns and maybe a bit of tape. There is a boulder field to traverse but not too bad in the scheme of things.

Sun 12 Apr 2026 08:00 Nescient Peak Hiking 4 12

Nescient Peak lies to the north west of Lake Bill and is an Abel at 1125m. From the car park off the Mersey Forest Road, the well-marked Lake Myrtle Track initially climbs steeply through eucalypt forest before emerging onto Blizzard Plain. From there, cairns and tapes will lead us to the summit, which is reached after about 2.5 hours and offers views across the Mersey Valley to its bounding peaks. After exploring the summit area I thought that it would be interesting to descend directly down to Lake Bill and follow its shoreline back to the Lake Myrtle Track.

Sat 18 Apr 2026 Sun 19 Apr 2026 07:30 Bushwalking Tasmania Weekend - Crayfish Creek Hiking 3 20

Sat 18 Apr 2026 09:00 Rocky Cape Circuit Hiking 3 10

Rocky Cape circuit starting & finishing at the Rocky Cape National Park. Will include Tinkers LO, Anniversary Point & Cathedral Rocks.

A walk as part of the BWT weekend. A byo bbq will be held at the Crayfish Creek caravan park in the evening.

Sun 19 Apr 2026 08:00 Detention Pk Hiking 4 10

A walk as part of the BWT weekend.

Detention Pk is a short scrubby walk to a small mountain inland from the Rocky Cape National Park.

Not suitable for princesses or bogans.

Please Register by 12.0 noon on the day of the event.

Mon 20 Apr 2026 19:30 Social Meeting – Photo Comp – Counter Meal. Meeting

Always a great night to see what the photo comp judge looks for in our images of past trips and adventures.

Fri 24 Apr 2026 07:30 Suttons Tarn Hiking 4 15

Late April is a good time view the Fagus changing colour. We will head up the Overland Track from Ronny Cr with the first area at Crater Falls then Crater Lake onto Marions Lookout to Kitchen Hut, where we turn off and head to Suttons Tarn for lunch. After lunch head back to Kitchen Hut where we have the option to go back the same way or for longer day head along the Face Track and down past Lake Wilks and on to the Dove Lake circuit track back to the bus at the Dove Lake bus stop

Sat 25 Apr 2026 07:30 Western Creek Track to Higgs Track Hiking 4 15

It requires a car shuffle, but after leaving one car at the start of the Higgs track we will continue to the Western Creek Track and start our walk there. It is a lovely rainforest walk up to Whiteleys Hut and then we will continue across country following the lakes and tarns to Westons lake and join the Higgs track. Here we will head to Lady lake hut and continue to the waiting car at the start of the Higgs Track. This is a lovely circuit which involves some off track walking, hills and beautiful alpine country.

Sun 26 Apr 2026 08:00 Mother Cummings Head Hiking 4 12

The walk starts at the end of Smoko Ck Road and follows Mother Cummings Rivulet for a significant part of the way. A nice mix of rainforest along the valley changing to alpine vegetation on the plateau, with good views of the tiers and highlands, across to Mother Cummings Peak, east to Ben Lomond and north to Bass Strait – weather permitting. On the return trip we may take the less frequently used track on the east side of Mother Cummings Rivulet that involves a small stretch of boulder scrambling and negotiating some tree falls. An elevation gain of about 650 m and a total return trip of about 7 km. Tasmap 4638 Quamby Bluff.

Tue 28 Apr 2026 10:00 Redwater Creek and Stoodley Forest Hiking 2

A nice flat walk to Redwater Creek Falls and hopefully lots of autumn colour showing in the Stoodley Forest.

Thu 30 Apr 2026 12:00 Tall Trees Hiking 3 10

Tall Trees via Mt Duncan

We will meet at the Mt Gnomon Carpark at 12 noon and walk the road to Mt Duncan turn-off.   We ascend the lower section of Mt Duncan till we reach the sign directing us right or left.  We will take the left track and descend, steeply in parts so good footwear is essential.  We will cross several creeks along our way and pass through varying scenery (rainforest and dryer forests). It will be around a 3 hour walk with a break for a snack.  If you do have a walking stick, please bring it along to assist with the descent.  When I did this track in early February, there were quite a number of tree falls so expect to be up, over, down, under a few times. As always please bring a rain jacket, water and food.

Sat 2 May 2026 08:40 Mt Kate and Beyond Hiking 3 12

When I was on Mt Kate recently we walked over towards the northern edge and I noticed a lovely ridge line which looked easily accessible and would provide open walking over to a point where you could look down on the Dove river. It just looked like a nice addition to Mt Kate which is an interesting walk providing good views of Mts Cradle and Campbell and passes through an interesting variety of vegetation. The plan will be to meet at the bus depot in time to catch the 9am bus to Ronny Creek. Part of the day will be spent walking off  track and as it is a day of exploration I can't guarantee we won't encounter a bit of scrub.

Sun 3 May 2026 08:00 PCT Working Bee Working Bee 3

Autumn, as the days are cooling a little but plenty of daylight still, is generally a pleasant time to be in the bush. Parts of the track could do with a touch up before winter and with a later 8am start, what else would you be doing on a weekend? Join us for a day out on the PCT.

Wed 6 May 2026 09:00 Castra Falls Circuit Hiking 3 15

This will be an easy walk with the purpose of photographing the fungi and the waterfalls. It is approximately a 3-to-4-hour circuit with some short but steep sections.

Sat 9 May 2026 07:30 Millers Bluff Hiking 4 12

Far as I can tell this was last done by the club in 2019, so well overdue for another visit. I’ve not been here so my information about the walk is second hand. Not for the first time. Some of the walk is on an old fire trail which gets us up most of the elevation. Which is nice. There follows an off-track section to the summit which is decorated with communications towers. This part of the walk is likely to be a bit bouldery and scrubby. I’m estimating the walking time and distance to be something in the order of 5 hours and maybe up to 8km. Could be less, but we’ll find that out. As per the access instructions from the property owner, car parking at the track head is limited to three cars, hence there will be a hard numbers limit of 12 walkers.

Sun 17 May 2026 07:00 Solitary Mans Hut Hiking 4

We will head up the Walls Track to Trappers Hut, where we will turn off and to George Howes Lake and then head to Tiger Lake to the hut for lunch. After lunch return by the same route

Mon 18 May 2026 19:30 Committee Meeting Meeting

TBA

Tue 19 May 2026 10:30 Bike Ride to Latrobe for Lunch Cycling Cycling

This will be a nice easy ride to Latrobe for lunch and back. I would like to do a circuit ride which involves some riding on the road between Spreyton and Latrobe. The rest of the ride will be on the Coastal Pathway.

Wed 20 May 2026 08:00 Mt Farrell Hiking 3

Meet at 8am opposite Sargents IGA shop in Ridgley.  Drive to Tullah and park in the carpark on left opposite toilets near Wee Georgie train.  There is a coffee shop nearby to start of track!  We head up the track for about an hour before getting great views back over Lake Rosebery and Tullah!  Continuing on with Lake Mackintosh coming into view soon after!  Magnificent here!! Good spot for morn tea!  We turn right off the main track and continue to the trig before retracing short distance, sliding through a rock and making our way down across a short section of buttongrass plain to Lake Herbert for lunch.  We take the track back to the Cars from here we were following earlier.  A great Mountain to climb, with good views through to Mt Murchison and west coast mountains on a clear day.  Suitable for prospectives with a reasonable level of fitness.  Remember it is the west coast so please carry a good coat, good boots needed as track muddy in places, a warm drink and food also required!  Usually takes about 5 hours return.  Either visit close coffee shop or drive to Tullah Lodge for afternoon tea by the Lake as a good reward for our days effort!  I think you know by now its a fav!

Sat 23 May 2026 08:00 Mt Van Dyke Hiking 3

This is a peak I’ve never summitted, but walked past when it’s been clagged in.  We’ll meet in Ulverstone at 08:00, Sheffield at 08:30 to commence the walk from Gowrie Park. I’ve heard that some of the track is quite overgrown, however getting up to date info is difficult, so we’ll ”play it by ear”. It's probably a hard Grade 3.  I hope to do this as a circuit walk, it’s steep in places but the views should be worth while, if the weather allows.

Sun 24 May 2026 09:00 Navigation Skills Day Training 2 7

If you regularly venture out into the bush, particularly off-track, you should know how to navigate using a map and compass. In this skills development day we’ll concentrate on acquiring and developing navigation knowledge and skills.

The key areas to be addressed are:

  • Reading a map (contours, grid lines, grid references, map scale and other features).
  • The differences between True North, Grid North and Magnetic North.
  • Taking a bearing from a map (grid bearing) and avoiding the various “traps”.
  • Converting a grid bearing to a magnetic bearing.
  • Estimating distance to an objective.
  • Estimating movement time in open and dense country.
  • Moving on a bearing to a selected objective, using the principle of "aiming off".

We’ll cover the basic theory in one of the BBQ shelters near the Visitor Centre in Narawntapu National Park. We’ll then spend time moving on compass bearings from point to point, reading the ground and estimating distance and time.

I’ve set a limit of 6 other participants (with a waiting list of 2) so that everyone will get plenty of practice in navigating for and leading the group – repetition is king when it comes to embedding and making navigation skills automatic. I’ve also chosen Narawntapu because it’s relatively quick and easy to get to (especially for me), has excellent facilities and offers a mix of open, forested, flat and hilly country – perfect for what we want to do.

Equipment: Bring a daypack, notebook, pen/pencil, chair and a baseplate compass. If you don’t have your own compass see if you can arrange to borrow one from another club member. If you want to buy one I’d recommend one of the basic Silva or Suunto compasses such as the Silva Field MS or Suunto A-10 SH – these sell for about $40-$50. I’ll provide paper maps of the local area for use during our activities.

Transport: We’ll organise carpooling when we know who is coming.

Thu 28 May 2026 11:00 Leven River Tramway Hiking 2 10

Leven Tramway

We will meet at the Penguin District School carpark (carpooling may be an option) at 11am.  From here we will make our way along Dial Road to a small parking area near Keddies Creek. It is pleasant walk mostly following the old logging tramway which is part of our Penguin Cradle Trail.  Please ensure you have some lunch, water, rain jacket and sun protection with you. Good walking boots/shoes will also be necessary as there is a creek crossing and a possibility of muddy sections along the way.  The Tramway is part of Tasmanian logging/mining history and some artefacts can be seen.  Please note that it is be a return trip.

Sat 30 May 2026 Sun 31 May 2026 07:30 Prince Alberts Throne and Second Bar Lake Hiking 4 10

We will head up the Meander Falls track and then head onto the Plateau via the Dixon's Track. Once on top we will head cross country to Second Bar Lake and set up our camp. From here we will put on day packs and head over to Prince Alberts Throne for a look and explore the area in between. Once we get onto the Plateau there is no track and although the terrain is relatively clear of thick scrub, it is uneven and there are numerous creek crossings to negotiate. Expect any weather, although if it is really foul I will have a plan B.

Mon 1 Jun 2026 18:00 Counter Meal Social Event

Please Register by 12.0 noon on the day of the event

Mon 1 Jun 2026 19:30 Social Meeting – Ting - 100 Walks Quest “One Step at a Time”, Counter Meal, Walker out. Meeting

A personal journey through the 100 Walks Quest, sharing highlights, challenges, favourite walks, and what I’ve learned along the way — with plenty of inspiration for fellow walkers.

Wed 3 Jun 2026 09:00 British Walk in Latrobe Hiking 2 15

Meet at the Bells Parade Latrobe Reserve at 9am.  We will walk UP Dooleys Hill opposite, for a workout before our lunch,  hearing some wonderful birdlife if lucky!  If we take the correct track we will come out behind the Mersey Hospital and follow the streets around to the Mackeys Hotel at 161 Gilbert St in time for a 12.30pm lunch.  A definition for a British walk is - a ramble in the countryside to a pub for lunch before continuing - so come and join in the fun!  I have booked   for 15, so if full give me a ring!  Our Club did their 2nd official Club walk on this date June 3rd 1960 to Quamby Bluff on this day so come along and help celebrate 66 years of Club walks!  All welcome!

Thu 25 Jun 2026 11:00 Mt Montgomery Circuit Hiking 3 10

MT MONTGOMERY CIRCUIT VIA THE NEW TRACK OFF THE SUMMIT

We will meet at the Mt Montgomery Carpark at 11am. For those who haven’t had the pleasure of undertaking this hike, come along.  It is a ascent to the summit of Mt Montgomery with delightful views to the east.  From the summit we head down the new track to Keddies Creek to join the Penguin Cradle Trail back to the cars.  All up 4 hours (ish).  The views on the way down from the summit are worth the effort to ascend Monty (my affectionate name).  As always be prepared and carry a rain jacket, water and food.  We will probably lunch on the summit.  The hike is on well-maintained tracks however good footwear is essential.
