Walking for Pleasure

NWWC Events Program

Start Date End Date Departs Title    Event Type Grade Limit Description
Wed 28 Jan 2026 08:00 A day in the Tarkine Part 1 Hiking 3

Meet at Burnie Yacht Club 8am and drive to the Forest General Store, 526 Mengha Rd Forest for our coffee fix first!  From there we head to the Black River Reserve for a look before driving through Irishtown and onto Trowutta Arch!  After we leave the Arch we head over the Tayatea Bridge on the Arthur River towards Rapid River and the Dempster Plains Lookout!  I havn't been into this area since 2009 but I know there was some damage in the Wes Beckett Falls area, but we will try to walk the road into the Falls.  We will be on the Mt Bertha Rd. The falls are on the Dodds Creek and named after a well-liked forester Wes Beckett from Smithton. On the way home we will pop into the Milkshakes if time permits for afternoon tea.  We will continue with the circuit on the next program.  As you can see more driving than actual walking but a visit to some amazing places!

Sat 31 Jan 2026 07:30 PCT Working Bee Working Bee 3

With summer and longer days it is time to explore more parts of the PCT. We were fortunate to have obtained a Wildcare grant to employ specialized contractors to work on some sections for us. We may need to also do work on these sections, so come along to visit some of the areas we only get to during summer. Join us for a pleasant day in the bush …. or maybe even a mountain view.

Sat 7 Feb 2026 08:00 Liffey Bluff Hiking 4 20

Here’s another hill that doesn’t seem to have been on the program for a while. About 5 years or so it seems. Anyway, time for another visit. We’ll come from the bottom, that being the Upper Liffey Falls car park. It’s about an 11km or so round trip with a 600m or so ascent. Taped track from memory up to the plateau and then a (more or less), cairned route over to the summit. “Summit” being a rather pretentious name for what is basically a higher bump than the other bumps along the escarpment edge looking towards Projection Bluff. Should take about 7 hours or so. The walk across the plateau – which as I said earlier (pay attention!), is a more or less cairned route – qualifies as “off track”, but the scrub is not too ghastly.

Sun 8 Feb 2026 09:45 Lunch With A View Cycling Cycling 8

Now that I’ve got your attention, I’d better tell you that you’ll need to ride about a 32km circuit (in total) if you want to enjoy Lunch With A View. The route will be on both bike paths and fairly quiet roads. Due to the popularity of the Atrium Café, I’ll need to book a week in advance so if you wish to join me please register early and, barring unforeseen circumstances, be certain you can attend.

Mon 9 Feb 2026 Mon 16 Feb 2026 12:00 Lake Pedder kayak expedition Kayaking Kayaking 8

Now Plan B with minor date change, due to inadequate numbers. 8 days including traveling on Lake Pedder.  originally: I am planning 12 days kayaking in this magnificent area. Dates must be considered flexible due to weather. The plan is to drive to Southport on Feb 8, load all gear that evening and head out very early the next morning. We could be delayed due to unsuitable weather so I will plan to do a few activities in the area  and that could delay our return. All participants will need to pay a non-refundable $1400 to secure their place plus any accommodation costs. If needing to cancel, it will be your job to find a suitable replacement. This trip is only suitable for very experienced kayakers who are self-sufficient.  14 days food will be carried in case there is a delay in pick up. My Plan B is 6 or so days on the Western section of Lake Pedder.

If needing more details- phone me.

Tue 10 Feb 2026 10:00 A stroll around the Don River Hiking 2

An easy stroll around the Don River in the morning with lunch at the Del Luck picnic shelter. After lunch for those who wish to we will walk along the new track to Eugenana. Join me for part of the walk or both or just join us at the Don for lunch.

Sat 14 Feb 2026 Sun 15 Feb 2026 07:30 Fisher Bluff Hiking Multiday 4 10

Drive to Lake Mackenzie, start walking the Blue Peaks Track for a couple of km, before turning off and going cross country across mostly alpine grass. We may encounter a little bit of scrub. After summiting we'll head to Harry Lees Lake to camp for the night. The next day we'll head back to the Blue Peaks Track via Middle Lake and detour to Blue Peaks peak, and then back to the car park

Tue 17 Feb 2026 10:00 Copper Cove Hiking 2 10

This will be a relaxing walk to Copper Cove.  It will include beach walking, rock scrambling and headland walking.  Prospective are most welcome.  Sturdy boots will be required if the tide permits us to scramble around the rocks to Copper Cove.  Please bring lunch, snacks and wet weather gear (just in case).

Sun 22 Feb 2026 07:00 Split Rock Circuit Hiking 4 15

In late September 2025 conditions weren’t ideal to complete the full circuit but hopefully we’ll be more successful at this time of the year.

Just to reiterate, it is a delightful walk that has the lot: beautiful rainforest, creeks, waterfalls, spectacular sandstone formations, scree and a river. There is a fairly large scree field which takes about 50 minutes to cross so potential walkers must be comfortable on this sort of terrain.

Thu 26 Feb 2026 12:00 Mt Duncan and Tall Trees Hiking 3 10

We’ll meet at the Gnomon Carpark at 11:00am. From there, we’ll follow the road up to the Mt Duncan sign before beginning our ascent. After reaching the summit, our return route will take us along the Tall Trees Track, providing a scenic variation on the way back to the cars.

Expect some steady climbs and descents, so please wear sturdy walking boots. Bring rain gear, water, and food, as the walk will take around three hours, depending on the group’s pace and fitness levels.

Sat 7 Mar 2026 Sun 8 Mar 2026 07:00 Mt Darwin and Mt Owen Hiking 4 15

The club had a heroic, but alas failed, attempt to climb Mt Darwin in October of 2025. Foiled by that oft pernicious West Coast weather. Fingers crossed for better conditions this time. It’s a bit of a drive down to the Queenstown area so I’m going to make it a weekend, probably staying at the caravan park. People can choose what they wish to do, come for either one day or both. And if coming for the weekend choose where you wish to stay the night. I estimate Darwin to be in the order of a 10km round trip and between 5 to 6 hours. There’s a rather forlorn track for part of the way which gives up in disgust towards the end. Thence off track to the summit. As I said, we didn’t make it last time so the last couple of klicks will be a bit of an adventure. It didn’t look too hideous – as far as we could tell in the pouring rain. But who knows.

According to the Abel notes, Mt Owen should be a bit easier. Should. No guarantees though. Apparently for part of the way up we may have to dodge mountain bikes hurtling down. All part of the adventure I suppose.

Wed 11 Mar 2026 08:00 A day in the Tarkine Part 2 Hiking 3

Leaving from the Burnie Yacht Club at 8am and driving to the Forest General Store 526 Mengha Rd Forest for our coffee fix first! From there we will head for Irishtown and turn right down into the Roger River area following the Sumac Rd over the famous Kanunnah Bridge. It sits high above the mighty Arthur River and is always a great place to stop and have a wander, there is an undercover reserve for those that didnt have that first coffee fix!  At the other end of the Bridge we turn left and stop shortly after to see the view from the famous Sumac Lookout!  On from here we will drive to see the beautiful Lake Chisholm sinkhole area before retracing back to Julius River Reserve and spending the rest of our time for the day here!  There are undercover areas, beautiful forest tracks etc to explore and a Toilet.  Come and help us explore this wonderful area for the day!

Thu 12 Mar 2026 10:00 High Tea in a high place Hiking 3

Just for fun, lets walk to the top of a hill with some fancy food and champagne for a shared high tea with a view.

Thu 19 Mar 2026 09:30 Black Bluff Hiking 3 10

With the track in good condition, I thought a walk to Black Bluff is called for.  There will be 2 options here, with number one being a walk to the trig point and number two, a walk to Paddy's Tarn only. It will all depend on the day, the weather and the group.  I am prepared to split the group for those who want to venture up to the trig point (this includes me).  Please bring lunch and snacks.  Wet weather gear and warm clothes are a must as the weather can change quite rapidly up on Blackie.  Sturdy boots are also necessary so no sneekers or no walk (with me).

Sun 22 Mar 2026 Sat 28 Mar 2026 07:30 Lake Burbury Kayaking Kayaking 10

Lake Burbury kayak camp.

I would like to hold a 3-4 night camp on Lake Burbury (with a 7 day window), with 1 or 2 camp sites and explore the Lake by kayak as day trips.

Details will be announced by early January 2026. The trip is weather dependent and we may need to be flexible a day or 2 either side of the stated dates.

Wed 25 Mar 2026 08:30 British Walk in Stanley Hiking 2 15

Meet 8.30am at the Burnie Yacht Club and drive to Stanley.  We will walk to see Henry Hellyer's grave at the cemetery as well as various other points of interest before settling into the pub at 19/21 Church St for lunch at 12.30pm.  Come along and explore beautiful Stanley.  Bring your thermos for a cuppa if you like or find a coffee shop!

Thu 26 Mar 2026 12:00 Mt Gnomon to Mt Dial and return Hiking 3 10

A day in the Mighty Dial never disappoints! This walk offers the perfect mix of challenge, stunning views, and plenty of fresh air. We’ll meet at the Mt Gnomon car park at 12pm before heading up the track to Mt Gnomon. The climb is a little steep, but the sweeping views from the top make it well worth the effort. After a break for lunch, we’ll continue along the saddle to Mt Dial. Even though it’s a return trip, there’s always something new to notice along the way. Expect around 3 hours of walking, with a few ups and downs. As always, bring sturdy boots, a hat, rain jacket, food, water, and of course—your best smile!

Sat 28 Mar 2026 09:15 Information Day for Prospective Members Training N/A 10

This is a club training day for new members, 'prospectives', regardless of their level of experience. It will be focussed at improving members' bushwalking skills and knowledge about the club. The day will cover a range of topics indoors in the morning followed in the afternoon by series of training exercises outdoors. Feel free to bring along any questions about bushwalking or the club. Robin has about 2,000 days experience on one-day and extended trips in the outdoors, many in a leadership role.

Attending a training day is part of the requirements to become a senior member of the club. Participants should have joined the club before they attend. Register via the members' trip registration page on the club website. The day will start at 9:15 am at Apex House, Ulverstone and finish after a practical component at the Dial Range, near Penguin, about 5 pm.

Participants will be expected to have read the Guide to Bushwalking for Prospective members which is on the club website. This document includes information about the club as well as bushwalking more generally. More details will be sent to participants after they have registered. The day will be adjusted to take into account participants experience and interests.

Wed 1 Apr 2026 Thu 2 Apr 2026 07:30 Tyndall Range and Mt Murchison Hiking Multiday 4 10

A couple of days away staying overnight at the Tullah Lakeside Lodge (64734121). We will meet at Ridgley and drive to the start of the Tyndall Range Walk on the Wednesday morning.  After a big effort up onto the Range, we can then enjoy some time exploring this wonderful place and return to the Tullah Lakeside Lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.  For those who want to bring their own form of accommodation, that is absolutely fine but please make your own arrangements on where you will overnight.  For those choosing to stay at the Lodge, please make your own overnight booking. On the Thursday morning, for those who are interested, we will climb Mt Murchison, returning home in the late afternoon/early evening.

Please note that Mt Murchison has some interesting sections on the climb to the top, so if "exposure" is a problem, it may not be the mountain for you.
